A Brief History of the Future of Education: Learning in the Age of Disruption
Sunday December 8, 2024 9:45am - 10:45am EST
4E
Schools were designed over a century ago to serve a generation of learners that existed before smartphones, before computers, before nuclear power ? even before women could vote. Although the dedicated educators of today work harder than ever before, they keep producing citizens that aren?t ready for a workforce that is a constant victim of change and disruption. Schools are the victims of the TTWWADI mindset (That?s The Way We?ve Always Done It). They must question and unthaw frozen mindsets and realign instructional practices to prepare their learners for the digital age. This hands-on, brains-on presentation explores the nature of TTWWADI and how disruptive innovation has led to the need for educational change. Participants will explore why today?s kids are different and how to access the new core learning attributes of the digital generations. We will also explore how learning must change to prepare learners who are fluent in the next-generation skills they require for success. Finally, we will investigate the new roles educators must embrace to reach their learners where they are at. After all, we want to prepare our learners for their futures and not our past.

Our First Year as a "Phone Free School" and How It's Going
Sunday December 8, 2024 2:15pm - 3:15pm EST
5D
The 2024-2025 school year will be our school's first experiment as a fully and intentionally phone-free high school. Additionally, our middle school is majorly overhauling its policies and procedures around personal devices. Come see how we spent the spring of 2024 developing our plan, getting buy-in from (i.e. convincing) students and parents and see how it's going so far. We'll open up about our extensive process, the reasoning behind the school's decision, and how we are currently ensuring both fidelity and student support through the process. We'll also discuss from an educational technology perspective what can happen curricularly when students suddenly don't have their personal devices on-hand and how we can support teachers around that.

Anchoring your classroom in innovation is crucial to enhance teaching and learning. Join JJ Ferrell, Travis Ivory, and Deb Haynie (Instructional Facilitators of Technology from Loudoun County Public Schools) for an interactive session, "Rock, Paper, Scissors, Chatbot," where we pit three leading AI chatbots (ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Gemini) against each other to determine the best chatbot for various educational tasks. We will navigate a series of practical prompts, such as creating leveled reading texts, composing professional emails, generating engaging newsletter articles, crafting lesson plans, designing interactive activities, creating assessments, and providing student feedback, to these chatbots to evaluate their performance. Attendees will witness firsthand how each chatbot anchors itself to these prompts, gaining insights into which AI tool is most suitable for different types of educational tasks, ultimately empowering educators with the knowledge to integrate AI effectively into their teaching practices and innovate their classrooms.

What happens when a Technology Coach and a Librarian get reunited after 4 years of being separated? See the fruits of our four years apart as AI happened. Although ChatGpt made all the headlines, there's a Pandora's box of AI tools to navigate and Education doesn?t sail at the speed of AI. Threat or tool, how do we pilot our vessels in a sea of AI tools in a way that avoids overestimating and underestimating AI technology? See how we approached AI tools as learners and then as teachers. Anchor in on one of our five tools to explore. As time permits, we will discuss source reliability, equity algorithms, digital redlining, chatbots and writing instruction. Join us as we share our larger manifest on tools for you to explore and gather your feedback on what works and what doesn?t. Digital AI resources will be made available.; Technology and Global Ethics: Where do we anchor with tech as we navigate environmental, intellectual, and social challenges? What circumstances and solutions require us to sail away from the shores of technology and which ones require more support for a quality anchor? When do we need to dock on topics related to Digital citizenships and innovative technology? How do we sail past distributing a list of moral guidelines to training students how to navigate their own moral decision-making when it comes to technology, its use, and impact? If you have ever pondered any of these questions, this is the session for you. Join us as we share our ideas and experiences on how we helped students harbor around technology and ethics.
