A Brief History of the Future of Education: Learning in the Age of Disruption
Sunday December 8, 2024 9:45am - 10:45am EST
4E
Schools were designed over a century ago to serve a generation of learners that existed before smartphones, before computers, before nuclear power ? even before women could vote. Although the dedicated educators of today work harder than ever before, they keep producing citizens that aren?t ready for a workforce that is a constant victim of change and disruption. Schools are the victims of the TTWWADI mindset (That?s The Way We?ve Always Done It). They must question and unthaw frozen mindsets and realign instructional practices to prepare their learners for the digital age. This hands-on, brains-on presentation explores the nature of TTWWADI and how disruptive innovation has led to the need for educational change. Participants will explore why today?s kids are different and how to access the new core learning attributes of the digital generations. We will also explore how learning must change to prepare learners who are fluent in the next-generation skills they require for success. Finally, we will investigate the new roles educators must embrace to reach their learners where they are at. After all, we want to prepare our learners for their futures and not our past.

The purpose of this project is to build collaborative partnerships around the integration of CT 2.0, 2024 Computer Science SOLs, development of immersive experiences and career readiness for K-12 educators in Region IV. With the success of this grant our ?how? is to foster the acceleration of the immersion of experiences through the CSTA program and internships with CodeNinja. This is a semester long program that will foster curriculum development for VDOE?s new Computer Science 2024 standards, research in building CT 2.0 experiences that integrate multiple content areas, and culminates in a one of a kind immersive experience that will allow Region IV teachers to integrating curriculum while exploring new concepts in CT, testing boundaries of robotic and AI equipment and collaborating with teachers in multiple grade level contents. The partnership will focus on the multiple layers of CT development, the build out of immersive experiences for educators and students and hopes to instill career readiness by incorporating opportunities in collaboration, internships and professional development for WPS and Region IV teachers, technology specialists, educational interns, students and the local communities. The intent is to create immersive experiences through play and collaboration around VA?s Standards of Learning (SOLs) that will enhance student engagement with integrated content as well as increasing SOL scoring in targeted content. Furthermore, a secondary intent is that either through new skill building or re-skilling, we will encourage collaboration of teachers throughout Region IV divisions that will include curriculum development, colab teaching and and development. Through this immersion we will develop student interests in computer science jobs and will provide eight internship opportunities within the school divisions.

The current state of education is rigorous and grade focused. Students often struggle to achieve to the required level, but rarely know why they struggle or how to address the problem. In this session, a classroom teacher and instructional coach discuss usage of curriculum tools (CED, LMS, Scoring Guidelines, and exams) to redevelop a notebook and an online portfolio to track and communicate progress. Participants code notebooks to the standards, skills, or competencies, and track their overall progress on those skills in their electronic portfolio. We discuss formative assessment as instant and varied data points and self, peer, and reassessments. Additionally, we discuss summative assessment as a means to build capacity and foster skill acquisition. Other benefits include: growth mindset, differentiation, closing learning gaps, relationship building, and social-emotional learning. Exemplars and stakeholder feedback will be shared.

Students as Creators: Leveraging Authentic Assessments to Build Learning Resource Libraries
Monday December 9, 2024 3:30pm - 4:30pm EST
3E
What if students didn't just consume knowledge, but actively created enduring learning resources to support their peers and future classes? This presentation explores how authentic assessment projects enable precisely that. Through examples like study guides, podcasts, videos, games and more, attendees will see how giving students choice in demonstrating mastery unlocks creativity and engagement. But the impact extends far beyond the individual student experience. When these authentic projects are curated and shared, they become part of a continually expanding library of crowdsourced, student-created learning materials for each course. Rather than disposable assignments, student work transforms into self-perpetuating repositories that benefit cohort after cohort. Participants will gain strategies for implementing this transformative model where learners aren't just consumers but creators. By positioning students as knowledge architects, educators cultivate learner autonomy while building robust interdisciplinary resources. Attend this session to revolutionize assessment while harnessing the power of learners as content developers.

Dive in deep into how an action research model can leverage your student's screen use to tell compelling and place-based stories about how our devices are impacting our health. Three years, ago, we presented at VSTE about how we were leveraging a shift from Digital Citizenship to Digital Health and Wellness while we connected powerful data (screen use metrics, grades, varsity letters, behavioral data and more) to show students how their screen use was impacting themselves and their community. We found that this model was significantly better received in the secondary grades where digital citizenship lessons weren't quite hitting the mark. Now, our data set is three years larger and a powerful conversation starter. Check back in with us to talk about what we've loved, what we'd do differently, what we're doing to inform policy and parent outreach, and how you might integrate this at your school.

Conversations Among Students: How Panel Discussions Can Innovate Presentations
Tuesday December 10, 2024 8:30am - 9:30am EST
2C
Are you tired of the old ways of having students present information? Do you feel like the normal student led presentations are weighing down their learning and your instruction? Are you ready for a more innovative, student-led approach? Then look no further than the Panel Project! As educators, a staple of our formative and summative assessment repertoire is the presentation. Throughout the years, we have seen new, and innovative ways to conduct these projects that have increased rigor, differentiation, and student choice. However, educators always seem to be looking for a new port in which to drop anchor, and the next innovative idea to take ahold of. In enters the Panel Project. Student success, the anchor of the Panel Project, grows from Student Control, Differentiation, Rigor, and Practical Application of skills, the main components of the Panel Project. In this session we will explain each of the components: how the Panel Project can be set up to give students varying amounts of control, from very little to complete, and how this encourages student engagement and ownership; how you can easily differentiate this project for every type of student in your classroom, so that all students become part of a team working towards a larger goal.; how the rigor found in each section of the project combines to allow students to reach for new heights; and how this project takes on new meaning for students as they play a purposeful role in the presentation. This session will also include an explanation on how the Panel Project idea came about, the progression of the project from a once-yearly endeavor to an anchor of our assessment and review practices, and how we foresee implementing this practice in the future. In addition, we will provide resources to help you create your own project and discuss ways this project could be used in different content areas and across different grade levels. So, are you ready to innovate your practices and join the discussion?

Podcasting As A Method For Reflection; Composing With Found Sounds in GarageBand
Tuesday December 10, 2024 1:00pm - 2:00pm EST
1B
This workshop offers an innovative approach to music composition using Apple iPads. Participants will learn how to capture everyday sounds and transform them into unique musical compositions through the powerful features of GarageBand. This hands-on session aims to demonstrate the creative potential of found sound projects and challenge attendees to consider how they might integrate this engaging activity into their own courses. By the end of the workshop, participants will not only have created their own mini-compositions but also gained insights into enhancing student engagement through technology-driven music education strategies. Join us to explore the intersection of technology, creativity, and pedagogy, and leave with practical ideas for inspiring your students.; As we seek novel methods for students to reflect on learning experiences, this session encourages participants to consider the podcast as a creative method for reflection. We have learned the value of reflection, but students are sometimes resistant to providing meaningful responses to our prompts. By encouraging creative methods for the reflection activity, students are more keen to participate and provide in-depth reflections on learning. A brief unit covering the fundamentals of podcasting allows the student to create a podcast format including their own unique intro/outro music, bumpers, and underscore - opportunities to personalize their artifact. Furthermore, the facilitator is able to collect and retain these audio reflections in a portfolio that provides evidence of continued growth and reflection. Adaptable to any content area, this presentation will provide materials and activities to move from ideation to action.
